SABRES: Miller Signs Extension
July 18, 2008
Buffalo Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller signed a five-year contract extension with Buffalo on Friday, according to WGR Radio in Buffalo.
BOTTOM LINE: This is a wise investment for the Sabres, as Miller is definitely one of the top goaltenders in the league. This will lock him up through the 2013-2014 season.
AVALANCHE: Forsberg Won’t Start Season
July 15, 2008
Colorado Avalanche center Peter Forsberg wouldn’t be able to play until after Christmas if he signs with a team for the 2008-09 season, according to the Denver Post.
BOTTOM LINE: Forsberg has been battling an array of injuries the last couple of years, and he is still undecided about his future. Last season, he returned in February and was a fantasy asset. Don’t draft him, but keep an eye on the situation.
CANUCKS: Demitra Wants to Come Aboard
July 10, 2008
Free Agent Winger Pavol Demitra’s preferred choice with which to sign a free-agent contract is Vancouver, according to an interview he had with Vancouver radio station CKNW.
BOTTOM LINE: We can definitely see a fit there. If he is willing to take slightly less than desired, both sides will be able to make this work.
CAPITALS: Federov to Return
July 10, 2008
Washington Capitals forward Sergei Federov has signed a one-year $4 million contract to return to D.C. next season.
BOTTOM LINE: Federov turned back the clock last season, as he was very productive down the stretch. He will likely play with Alexander Ovechkin, so his value will be pretty good.
DUCKS: Likely to Sign Brendan Morrison
July 8, 2008
Former Vancouver Canucks center Brendan Morrison is expected to sign a one-year deal with Anaheim, according to the Orange County Register.
BOTTOM LINE: Morrison was a solid contributor a couple of years back, but he has been plagued with injury since. If he returns to form, this could be a solid pickup for GM Brian Burke.
RED WINGS: Reel in Hossa
July 3, 2008
Former Pittsburgh Penguins winger Marian Hossa has inked a one-year contract worth $7.4 million to play for the Detroit Red Wings.
BOTTOM LINE: I don’t know why he didn’t sign a long term deal somewhere, but it looks like he either really wanted to play in Detroit, or he didn’t think the market was strong enough. This signing clearly establishes the Red Wings as the team to beat in the West.
STARS: Bringing Aboard Avery
July 3, 2008
Former New York Rangers forward Sean Avery has signed a four-year $15.5 million contract to play with the Dallas Stars.
BOTTOM LINE: Avery is one of the best agitators in the league, and this is a good signing for Brett Hull in Dallas. Avery provides the distraction that will help the players around him get more scoring opportunities. He may face health issues because of his style of play, but he will be an asset for Dallas.
BLUE JACKETS: Trade Offense for Defense
July 3, 2008
Columbus Blue Jackets forward Nikolai Zherdev was traded to the Rangers along with Dan Fritsche in exchange for Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman, according to TSN.ca.
BOTTOM LINE: This trade definitely made sense for both teams. The Rangers were looking for some scoring, so Zherdev fits the bill for that, and the Blue Jackets acquired the young Tyutin, who will prove that he is an above average defender. If Zherdev develops into the player scouts think he can be, the Rangers will easily be the victor in this deal.
DEVILS: Re-Uniting With Rolston
July 3, 2008
Free agent forward Brian Rolston has inked a four-year contract to return to his old stomping grounds in New Jersey. The deal is worth $20 million over four seasons.
BOTTOM LINE: The Devils add a 30-goal scorer here, but the length of the deal could be a problem for them down the line. Rolston is already 35, so who knows how much the Devils will be able to get out of him.
LIGHTNING: Now Have Olie the Goalie
July 2, 2008
Former Washington Capitals goaltender Olaf Kolzig has signed a one year deal to be the backup goalie for the Tampa Bay Lightning.
BOTTOM LINE: This should be a nice fit. He will be a more than adequate backup, and may even get the shot to become the starter at some point this season if he performs.
BLACK HAWKS: Bring Aboard Christobal Huet
July 2, 2008
Former Montral Canadiens goaltender Christobal Huet has signed a four year deal, worth a reported $5.625 million per season to play for the Chicago Blackhawks.
BOTTOM LINE: Two huge splashes in one day for Chicago, with Brian Campbell being the first. They should be a more respectable team next season.
RANGERS: Bringing in Redden
July 2, 2008
Former Ottawa Senators defensemen Wade Redden has signed a six year contract to become a member of the New York Rangers.
BOTTOM LINE: The deal is reportedly worth $6.5 million per year, and Redden will be paired with Roszival on the power play. Redden is coming off of a disappointing year, but this helps the Rangers big time.
BLACK HAWKS: Campbell Signed
July 2, 2008
Former San Jose Sharks defensemen Brian Campbell has signed an eight year contract to play for the Chicago Blackhawks.
BOTTOM LINE: Campbell was clearly the best defensemen on the market, and this will be a huge help for a subpar Blackhawks defense.
MAPLE LEAFS: A Cu-Jo Reunion?
June 30, 2008
Calgary Flames goaltender Curtis Joseph, who is a free agent on July 1, could be returning to Toronto to back up Vesa Toskala, reports Toronto’s FAN590.
BOTTOM LINE: They are looking for a one year stopgap option in Toronto, so Joseph is a logical choice. Justin Pogge should be ready for the 09-10 season. Don’t look at Joseph as a fantasy option.
RANGERS: Jagr Likely a Goner
June 30, 2008
New York Rangers winger Jaromir Jagr has a one-year $6 million offer on the table from the Rangers. He said he would rather remain with the Rangers, but he is more likely to take the three-year offer from a team in Europe.
BOTTOM LINE: The Rangers want the captain back, but only if he would sign the deal with incentives leading to a second year. We’ll see how this unfolds.
