The key to being a good fantasy baseball manager is knowing who to buy on when they’re not doing so hot and who to sell when they are on fire. This helps you acquire the necessary players that you will need to keep your team at top of the rankings for the entire season. There are five players who should be used as trade bait:

ALEX RODRIGUEZ

New York Yankees, 3B
Comment:
Great player. He could go down as the best hitter of all time. However, if you are smart you will use him in a trade to make your team better. He hit a HR in each of his first two games back from the DL, that will get you a lot in return from a trade. Plus, he’s notorious for choking in the postseason, so get rid of him before he sinks your team.

JOSH HAMILTON

Texas Rangers, OF
Comment:
Reyes’ 78 stolen bases last season were amazing fantasy feat, but his home run (12) and RBI (57) totals were disappointing. Those who thought the 24-year-old was a fair bet for 20 home runs and 80-plus RBI may have been a bit too giddy about his potential. Fortunately, the guy is still part of a good lineup, and if everything falls into place for him, better numbers should be on the way. One thing’s for sure, if you draft Reyes, you pretty much will have the steals category in your back pocket.

ALBERT PUJOLS

St. Louis Cardinals, 1B
Comment:
He’s hitting .351 with 11 homers. In addition, he took out two Padres (Chris Young and Josh Bard) in a matter of three plays on Wednesday night. With that kind of play, who knows how long his elbow will hold up? As the old saying goes, ‘Get while the gettin’ is good.’

LANCE BERKMAN

Houston Astros, 1B
Comment:
Nobody, and I mean nobody, has been hotter than Sir-Lance-A-Lot lately. He’s scored 50 runs in 47 games heading into Thursday, he leads the league in homers (16) and he can’t possibly keep that up. Like the old adage instructs, ‘Buy low, sell high.’ No one has been higher than Berkman, with the possible exception of Josh Hamilton.

BRANDON WEBB

Arizona Diamondbacks, SP
Comment:
He’s gone 9-1 with a 2.69 ERA so far this season. It’s unclear whether he can keep up those gaudy numbers, but chances are he won’t. The smart move here would be to get all you can from him before he turns back into human form.
